Local 727 Fights to Make Every Day Equal Pay Day

| April 2, 2019

A Message from John Coli, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 727:

While today may be Equal Pay Day—the day that marks how far into 2019 an average woman has to work in order to earn what a man earned in 2018—that designation does not truly reflect reality for Teamsters Local 727 women.  For our members, every day is an equal pay day.

In this Union, we have fought long and hard for collective bargaining agreements with clear, transparent wage rates that are based on the work an employee performs.  When Local 727 negotiates wage rates for our members, gender is never a factor.  Instead, equal work is guaranteed to receive equal pay.  Under all Local 727 contracts, all Teamsters are equal.

To make sure our members receive the fair treatment they deserve, every Local 727 collective bargaining agreement includes a strong grievance procedure to enforce the wages required under the contract.  In fact, in 2018 alone, Local 727 filed nearly 500 grievances on behalf of members.

Teamsters Local 727’s pursuit of fair treatment for all workers is a fight I am proud to lead each day.  Especially today, on Equal Pay Day, when we can see so clearly the positive impact our Union has had on eliminating inequality in the workplace.  But our work is not finished.

Together, we must continue to fight back against the wage gap by encouraging our non-union friends and family members to organize.  The more people that are covered by a strong Union collective bargaining agreement with transparent and fair wages, the quicker we can make pay equity a reality.

Fraternally yours,

John Coli, Jr.

Secretary-Treasurer
