Lifesource members benefit from new safety protocol secured in new contract
When LifeSource workers represented by Teamsters Local 727 ratified their latest contract on August 14, they locked down a vital new benefit — safety training.
Following a web-based defensive driving course, three safety meetings were held throughout the day on September 29 for LifeSource members at the company’s Rosemont facility. Thanks to new requirements negotiated by Local 727, these safety meetings now will be held quarterly.
The meetings give LifeSource members a chance to voice their concerns about safety at work and create a more efficient work environment. During Thursday’s meeting, members were able to address several new issues with management, including ice on the loading dock steps during the winter, the size of small supply trucks and the absence of an air filter in older trucks.
“As members who work directly with blood drive and donors, safety is a top priority for Teamsters at LifeSource,” said Local 727 President John Coli, Jr. “New contracts are an opportunity to reassess wages and benefits but also a chance to fight for new workplace protections like these that benefit the company and the employee.”
Teamsters Local 727 represents 43 drivers and MUAs at Rosemont-based LifeSource, which operates 18 community blood donor centers and conducts about 10 mobile blood drives each day.
