727 Seeks Help From Governor Pritzker & Mayor Lightfoot

| March 25, 2020

Local 727 is continuing to do everything it can to combat the existing safety and job loss concerns that have arisen since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and recently sent a letter to Mayor Lightfoot and Governor Pritzker informing them of unauthorized furloughs implemented by some of Chicago’s largest employers. While the Local is pleased to report that the City has been helpful thus far in keeping workers employed at A&R Janitorial, more action is needed.

“The Employers listed in the Union’s letter have abruptly turned their backs on their employees and implemented unauthorized furloughs because they were exempt under the Families First Coronavirus Act. The City and State must fill gaps created in this law and make employers provide their employees with paid leave instead of furloughs,” said John Coli, Jr. Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 727.

The Union has asked both Mayor Lightfoot and Governor Pritzker to extend the provisions of the Families First Coronavirus Act to employers with 500 or more employees operating in the Chicago or Illinois by providing a minimum of 14 days paid leave for any employee who cannot work as a result of the “Stay at Home Order” or COVID-19.
