Teamsters Offer Free Disability Services to Military Veterans

An offshoot of the national Helmets to Hardhats program, the Teamsters Military Assistance Program (TMAP) provides disability assistance for all military veterans and job placement opportunities for veterans in the construction industry. The program’s disability initiative alone can help workers track down services, benefits and funds owed to them as veterans — in some cases, for as much as tens of thousands of dollars in back benefits.

Regardless of Teamster membership, military veterans in all 50 states are encouraged to complete a TMAP Veteran Registration Form to begin the process to locate, determine and/or recoup any lost benefits or resources from military service.

Once completed, the form will assist TMAP personnel with filing individual claims with the military from the Teamsters’ Building and Construction Trades Division in Washington, D.C.

“We’ve already helped military veterans receive payments for chronic illnesses that they otherwise would not have gotten through their insurance companies, even while paying a high premium,” said Michael L. Yauger, Trustee of Teamsters Joint Council 25 and President of Teamsters Local 786.

Yauger, who also serves as the Teamsters’ national Helmets to Hardhats liaison, continued, “Military service can take a great toll on someone physically and emotionally, and we need to support our veterans with the services they are due. Financial compensation for an illness or disability acquired during a tour of duty is certainly the least we can do to show our veterans that we care about them.”

All completed registration forms should be mailed to: Teamsters Building and Construction Trades Division, c/o Teamsters Military Assistance Program, 25 Louisiana Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001. Forms may also be faxed to (202) 624-8107.
