MV-422 Paratransit Drivers & Aides Ratify First Teamster CBA

| October 17, 2019

Drivers and aides employed by MV Transportation, Inc. Division 422, who provide vital paratransit services to Chicago Public Schools, overwhelmingly ratified their first Teamster collective bargaining agreement this past Thursday, October 10.

Just a few months after the workers voted “YES” for Teamsters Local 727 representation, the Union bargaining committee was successful in securing a fourteen-month CBA that includes substantial wage raises for all members, fair bidding procedures, and strong job protections.  Local 727 also succeeded in aligning the new CBA, which will expire on December 31, 2020, with the renewal of MV’s contract with CPS.  By doing so, the Union has ensured that MV-422 members and the Local 727 bargaining committee will have greater bargaining power during the parties’ next negotiations and will be well-positioned to secure an even stronger contract in 2020.

In addition to raising wages twice over the term of the agreement, the new MV-422 CBA also requires general bids to be conducted twice each year.  The contract stipulates that the routes assigned during both general bids, as well as any open routes that may become available throughout the year, must be fairly assigned based strictly by seniority.

Local 727’s newest agreement with MV also includes crucial job protections for all MV-422 drivers and aides, such as a strong and efficient grievance and arbitration process.  The Local 727 bargaining committee was also successful in securing contract language that allows employees to refuse to cross a sanctioned picket line.

“Local 727 is proud to have succeeded in negotiating a first contract for our MV-422 members that is in-line with the industry standards this Union has fought hard to secure over the past decade,” said John Coli, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727.  “We are very proud to be able to welcome our new Teamster Brothers and Sisters and to congratulate them on ratifying their first union contract.”
