Third Annual Health Fair | Sept. 26, 2015

Participants Learn About Health Issues, Undergo Screenings at Sept. 26 Event

Health, wellness and camaraderie were the themes of the day at the Teamsters Joint Council 25 Women’s Committee’s Third Annual Health Fair on Sept. 26.

More than 100 Teamsters, supporters and exhibitors took part in the free event at the Teamsters Local 743 meeting hall in Chicago. Local 743 also provided food and refreshments, and several prizes were raffled.

Attendees had the opportunity to undergo screenings and learn about all different aspects of health and wellness from the nearly 20 exhibitors in attendance. The Women’s Committee also provided free flu shots to participants, which were administered by Osco pharmacist Laura Lucafo, a Teamsters Local 727 steward.

“We aim to educate our members on a variety of important health topics in a fun and engaging way,” said Maggie Jenkins, Women’s Committee President and Local 727 member. “The things we learned today can have real and lasting effects on people’s lives. We are grateful to all of the participants and vendors for helping make the event successful.”

Tanya Kimber-Jones and Sarah Little of the American Cancer Society spoke about the organization and its many programs, including Road to Recovery and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks, in which the Joint Council 25 Women’s Committee will be participating as part of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Teamsters Local 700 Office Administrator Valerie Berry also shared her experience as “a breast cancer survivor — and fighter.”

“Whenever you see me and ask how I’m doing, I always say the same thing, ‘I’m doing fine, I’m doing great,’ even if I’m not feeling well,” said Berry, a 17-year Teamster. “I just choose to have a positive attitude every day and keep fighting.”

The Health Fair also featured guest speaker Andrea Harkleroad of Employee Resource Systems, who spoke on the topic of women’s mental health and wellness.
