Teamster Local 727 Secretary-Treasurer Coli Attends Press Conference to Demand Trade Show Worker Relief
Yesterday, Teamsters Local 727 Secretary-Treasurer John Coli, Jr. joined Congress-woman elect Marie Newman and other labor leaders from across the city for a press conference at McCormick Place to demand economic relief for workers, especially those in the trade show industry. While it was (and remains) necessary to cancel trade shows to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect Chicagoland communities, Coli and other labor leaders talked about the necessity of the federal government to pass a stimulus package with extended unemployment relief, support for small businesses, and another round of individual stimulus checks. Secretary-Treasurer John Coli, Jr. talked about the need for robust economic relief for workers and the important role trade shows play in Chicago’s economy. Marie Newman promised to fight with Teamsters Local 727 and other area Unions for aid for trade show workers. “The trade shows at McCormick Place are vital to our city’s economy,” said John Coli, Jr. “It is not just Teamsters members that are sitting at home with no work or income because of cancelled shows. McCormick Place shows bring in millions of tourism dollars a year. Without trade shows to bring in those tourists, it can and will affect restaurant workers and owners, hotel employees, and parking operators and hikers. The trade show industry creates thousands of good Union jobs throughout this city, and those members help keep Chicago’s economy strong. The federal government must pass a stimulus package that helps all working people. We need extended unemployment benefits, cash pay outs, and financial support for states, counties, and small businesses,” said Coli. “I’m proud to stand with Congress-woman elect Marie Newman to demand aid for our trade show workers.” Member with questions should contact Business Representative Tommy Wilcox at 847-696-7500.
