PHOTOS: Local 727’s Membership Called to Support Women, Show Solidarity

| February 28, 2017

More than 100 members, officers, representatives, and staff attended the February 26 general membership meeting in Park Ridge to discuss the welfare of the local union. The highlight of the meeting was Secretary-Treasurer Coli’s remarks in support of the organizers of the national women’s march, including events on March 8. Mr. Coli urged membership that we should all show our support by joining the women since it would send a powerful message to people everywhere, particularly the new Trump administration, that workers’ hard-won rights will not be taken away without a serious fight.

The issue definitely struck a nerve, as a female member stood up and spoke passionately in support of those fighting for the various rights Trump wants to take away, the most important of which is the right of unions to even exist. Not surprisingly, her comments received enthusiastic applause.

Members also heard from President John Coli Jr. and business agents highlighting new contracts. Among the notable contract wins was a five-year agreement for Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare shuttle drivers and bellmen.

“In all my years working here, this is by far the best deal that we’ve ever gotten,” said Ray Pierce, the Rosemont hotel’s union steward. “You guys really came through for us, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.”

Attendees were also introduced to Local 727’s new communications director, Michael Brandfon. “I’m really excited to be working for the union,” Brandfon said. “I look forward to meeting each and every one of you and sharing some of your stories.”

The next general membership meeting will be at noon, Sunday, March 26, 2017, at the union’s meeting hall in Park Ridge. Pastries and coffee will be served, and prizes will be raffled.
