Secretary-Treasurer John Coli Jr. updated the membership on contracts, grievances, arbitrations and other union business during Teamsters Local 727’s general meeting on April 29, 2018.

Secretary-Treasurer Coli announced that Local 727 negotiated and ratified new contracts with Jack Hood Transportation, Modell Funeral Home, Hawthorne Racecourse Corliss OTB, Hawthorne Racecourse Program Sellers, Navy Pier, Edward Hotel, and John Jr. Installations.

Among the biggest victories Local 727 achieved during the past month were an arbitration award against Reliable Valet/River North Parking (owned and operated by Jack Kupiec) and a settlement at the National Labor Relations Board against janitorial services company ABS LLC (owned and operated by Yanette Gonzalez). The combined total amount of money awarded to the Union from these victories was approximately $448,000.

Additionally, Local 727 settled a wrongful termination grievance of a 12-year member. The member was returned to work at parking company ABM with full seniority and a $10,000 settlement.

Members also learned of the status of contract negotiations ongoing between the Union and Dr. Pepper. Secretary-Treasurer Coli acknowledged the Dr. Pepper members of the Union’s bargaining committee for their commitment to standing strong and staying focused on achieving a fair contract.

“Let’s give these guys a big hand and thank them for their efforts,” Coli said.

Another meeting highlight was the announcement that a black rhino at Brookfield Zoo underwent a CT scan at the Zoo last week. This was the first time that a CT scanner was brought into a zoo to perform such a scan on a rhino. Video of the event and photos of some Local 727 members in action can be found here.

Finally, members were introduced to new Local 727 Benefit Funds Representative Mick Vendafreddo. “This is a strong and vibrant Union and I want to thank the 727 Benefit Funds and the Board of Trustees for bringing me aboard,” Vendafreddo said. “I look forward to being at your service.”

The next general membership meeting will be held at noon on Sunday, May 20, 2018. Please note that the membership will also be voting on whether to suspend the summer general membership meetings of June, July, and August. The meeting will take place at the Local 727 meeting hall, 1300 W. Higgins Road, Suite 114, Park Ridge, IL. Local 727 will be hosting a picnic for members immediately following the meeting. Taco trucks will be stationed in the west-side back parking lot to serve lunch.
