Local 727 Stands with Striking UAW Auto Workers as they Initiate a Strike Against General Motors

| September 18, 2019

Workers represented by the United Auto Workers union initiated a strike against their employer, General Motors, at midnight on Sunday, September 15, after the parties were unable to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement.  The group of nearly 50,000 union members have been reported to have walked out of GM facilities across 9 states in an effort to secure fair wages, affordable health care, job security, a defined path to permanent seniority for temporary employees, and “our share of the profits” according to a recent UAW press release.

“Workers deserve nothing less than fair wages that allow them to care for their families.  We are proud to stand in solidarity with our striking Brothers and Sisters of the UAW as they fight for such fairness,” said John Coli, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727.

International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa also announced earlier this week that the Union would honor the UAW’s picket lines and Teamsters across the nation will not be transporting GM vehicles to dealerships.

“Teamsters know firsthand the strength that comes from standing united,” added Secretary-Treasurer Coli.  “We will not abandon our fellow workers while they pursue precisely what they are owed for their hard work.”
