Local 727 is Proud to Stand in Solidarity with the Chicago Teachers Union as they Fight for a Better Contract and Better Schools

| October 17, 2019

According to the Chicago Teachers Union, 25,000 teachers, clinicians, teaching assistants, and other public school support staff initiated a strike today at over 500 city schools after ten months of bargaining with the Chicago Public Schools failed to produce a fair contract.

“Local 727 is proud to stand in solidarity with CTU teachers, nurses, and staff as they bring their fight for a fair contract, improved working conditions, and better schools to the strike line,” said John Coli, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727.

According to the Union’s website, CTU has called for fair pay and benefits for all members, fully staffed schools—including a nurse, social worker, and librarian in every Chicago public school—and hard caps on class sizes that will allow teachers to give students the individual attention they need to thrive.

Today, Secretary-Treasurer Coli wrote and mailed a letter of support to President Jesse Sharkey and the striking members of the Chicago Teachers Union.

“In a day and age when workers are constantly under attack from all sides, it is more important than ever that unions stick together,” wrote Secretary-Treasurer Coli.  “To our CTU Brothers and Sisters, we have your back.  Local 727 is proud to stand with you today, tomorrow, and every day until fairness triumphs.”
