GLCCD Incompetence Costs Workers Money and Forces Several Drivers to Work 14-Hour Day

| November 19, 2019

When some OFS delivery merchandisers arrived to Great Lakes Coca-Cola Distribution’s Alsip facility this morning, GLCCD management did not have their delivery trucks ready.  Instead, the Teamsters Local 727 members, who work on commission, were forced to wait between five and six hours before their trucks were set and they could begin their workday.   As a result of GLCCD management’s incompetence, many of the affected OFS drivers will now be forced to work a fourteen-hour day.

“GLCCD forced OFS drivers to wait nearly an entire shift before they could begin their work, costing them a significant amount of time and money.  Now, these drivers must work an extremely long day in order to make up for the Company’s delays.  This is completely unacceptable,” said John Coli, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727.  “It’s irresponsible for GLCCD to have drivers regularly working to the Department of Transportation’s maximum number of hours.  Local 727 demands that the Company cease this practice and pay back all OFS drivers for any losses that resulted from the Company’s incompetence today.”

Local 727 has filed a grievance demanding that GLCCD respect the value of their employees’ time and make whole all OFS drivers who suffered a loss as a result of this morning’s delays.

This incident marks the second time this month that Local 727 has filed a grievance against GLCCD over unsafe working conditions.  Last week, the Union filed a grievance after GLCCD management failed to take immediate action to remedy frigid, unsafe conditions in its Niles warehouse.  Local 727 continues to demand GLCCD place members’ safety above profit.
