Working People’s Day of Action – Feb. 24

| February 22, 2018

Fifty years ago this April, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated while advocating for union public sanitation workers striking in Memphis, Tenn. To honor the legacy of Dr. King and his commitment to standing up for hardworking men and women, Teamsters Local 727 is encouraging all of its members to participate in the Working People’s Day of Action on Saturday, February 24.

Thousands of people are expected to gather in cities across the U.S. to demand an end to a system that protects the interests of big business and millionaires at the expense of working families. In Chicago, a rally will be held on February 24th at 12:00 p.m. in Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington St., to raise awareness about the upcoming Supreme Court case Janus v. AFSCME which could disenfranchise millions of public employees across the country.

Janus v. AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) is being backed by the National Right to Work Foundation, an anti-labor organization looking to weaken the influence of unions on behalf of their members. The organization supports “right-to-work” legislation that would deprive workers of fair wages, earned benefits, and workplace protections.

If the Supreme Court sides with corporations and those with extreme wealth, many dedicated public sector employees will have their collective bargaining rights curtailed. In addition, the livelihoods of all hardworking Americans, especially minorities and people of color, will be threatened.
