UIC Graduate Workers Ratify New Contract after a 3+ Week Strike

| April 12, 2019

After 13 months of negotiations and over 3 weeks on the strike line, more than 1,500 graduate and teaching assistants of the University of Illinois Chicago Graduate Employees Organization (UIC-GEO) Local 6297 have successfully secured and ratified a new collective bargaining agreement.  According to a recent UIC-GEO Facebook post, the graduate workers’ new 3-year contract—which includes the largest wage raise in the GEO’s history—contains no union concessions.

Local 727 is proud to have donated $5,000 to the UIC GEO Local 6297 strike fund to assist the UIC grad workers as they fought for fairness.

“Congratulations to UIC-GEO members on their spectacular win,” stated John Coli, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727.  “Local 727 was proud to stand in solidarity with UIC grad workers as they persisted on the long tough road to a fair contract.  Whenever Local 727 can support our fellow union Brothers and Sisters, rest assured we will be there ready to fight.”
