The Teamsters Joint Council 25 Women’s Committee recognized its 2016 scholarship recipients during a night of celebration at the Fourth Annual Gala Dinner Dance on Feb. 27 in Rosemont, Ill.

“The Women’s Committee has made a commitment to the education of Teamster women, and we honor that commitment through our scholarship program and other events throughout the year,” said Women’s Committee President Lisa Beecher of Teamsters Local 142. “We are so proud to recognize these incredible working Teamster women who are continuing their educations to empower themselves and their union sisters and brothers.”

The Women’s Committee awards five $1,000 scholarships annually to working members who demonstrate a desire to excel and reach their education goals. The 2016 scholarship winners are:

  • Tandra Lanier, Teamsters Local 743, DePaul University
  • Sheila Nesbit, Teamsters Local 743, Governors State University
  • Sheila Rivera, Teamsters Local 700, Loyola University
  • Angela Taylor, Teamsters Local 777, University of Phoenix
  • Annie Ware, Teamsters Local 743, Governors State University

Beecher, along with Women’s Committee Secretary-Treasurer Esmeralda Tapia of Local 458M, Recording Secretary Tracy Reed of Local 743 and Board Member Diahann Goode, presented the scholarship winners with certificates.

The 250 guests in attendance — including Congresswoman Robin Kelly, 10th Ward Alderman Susan Sadlowski Garza, State Rep. Linda Chapa La Via, and 40 Local 727 members, officers and staff — enjoyed dinner, drinks and dancing into the night in Penthouse Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Express O’Hare in Rosemont. Guests also partook in a photo booth, and everyone received a hurricane glass as a thank you from the Women’s Committee.

Proceeds from the Fourth Annual Gala Dinner Dance benefit the continuing education of Teamster women through seminars, workshops and a scholarship program. Additionally, the Women’s Committee will be sponsoring a rank-and-file member to attend the 2016 Teamsters Women’s Conference Sept. 22-24 in Hollywood, Calif.

Applications for the 2017 Women’s Committee scholarships will be available in November.

The Women’s Committee’s next quarterly membership meeting will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 19, at the Local 727 meeting hall in Park Ridge. Continental breakfast will be served, and all active attending members will be entered in a drawing to win a trip to the 2016 Teamsters Women’s Conference.
