PHOTOS: Officers, Representatives Update Membership on Union Business at General Meeting, Urge Civic Activism in Light of Anti-Worker Policies

President John Coli Jr. presided as officers and representatives updated the membership on contracts, grievances, arbitrations and other union business during Teamsters Local 727’s general meeting on March 26.

In the last month, Local 727 negotiated new contracts for Hawthorne ODT, Chicago Tribune drivers, and shuttle bus drivers and bellmen at the Orrington and Crowne Plaza hotels. The union also secured a first five-year contract for Laz Meters monitors.

“The parking industry has been the heart and soul of this local union for decades,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “These new members will be vital to Local 727’s continued growth and we welcome them to our family.”

Local 727 also has several ongoing contract negotiations, arbitrations, unfair labor practices against employers, and organizing campaigns.

Invited guest and counsel to the IBT, union attorney Stuart Davidson, stood up and spoke about the “Sybil” nature of the Trump administration, as it seems to change its personality with each passing day. What doesn’t change, he emphasized, was the administration’s desire to gut Obamacare by undercutting its subsidies. In the same vein, Davidson also mentioned Illinois Governor Rauner’s continued assault on reasonable legislative measures to shore up public sector pensions in the state.

“You’ve got to keep holding these politicians’ feet to the fire,” Davidson said. “It’s the only way they will get the message. Just as this union is fighting hard to preserve members’ rights, each of us as individuals has to fight hard as well so our voices can be heard loud and clear.”

On a fortuitous note, no moment of silences was needed this month.

The next general membership meeting will be held at noon on Sunday, April 30, 2017, at the Local 727 meeting hall, 1300 W. Higgins Road, Suite 114, Park Ridge, IL. Pastries and coffee will be served, and prizes will be raffled.
