Local 727 Volunteers for John Fritchey on Illinois Primary Day

| March 23, 2018

On Tuesday, March 20th, nearly 40 representatives and members of Teamsters Local 727 braved cold and windy conditions to support the re-election of John Fritchey to the Cook County Board of Commissioners by canvassing. Though Fritchey, who represents Cook County’s 12th District, ended up losing his battle, it was not without a good fight from the Teamsters.

“Naturally, we’re disappointed Commissioner Fritchey lost because he has been such a strong ally of working families and unions,” said John Coli Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “He stood by us during the fight to repeal the sugar tax, so it was only right that Local 727 stood by him during his fight for re-election.”

Coli added that it is vitally important for more union workers, in particular, to show up for every election – whether it’s a primary or a general – and vote for candidates who will continue to support labor-friendly policies that are in the workers’ best interests.

For example, Beatriz Ana Frausto-Sandoval, the only judicial nominee endorsed by Local 727, had proven through her work as an immigration attorney that she understood the difficulties faced by the labor movement and was willing to fight for workers. Despite facing great opposition on the road to election day, Frausto-Sandoval won her election, becoming the first Latina judge of Cook County’s 14th Subcircuit.

“Congratulations to Judge Frausto-Sandoval! Her election is proof that when more of us show up at the polls to vote, we can make history,” said Coli.

There will be another opportunity to support pro labor candidates like Commissioner Fritchey and Judge Frausto-Sandoval in the fall general election, which takes place this year on Tuesday, November 6th.
